something very different from what you might expect.

Arthur Conan Doyle Biography

In this compilation -

01 - Arthur Conan Doyle - An Introduction

02 - 1902 - 1909

03 - A Post Impressionist

04 - The Banner Of Progress

05 - The Wanderer

06 - Advice To A Young Author

07 - The Groom's Story

08 - The Groom's Encore

09 - Pennarby Mine

10 - Cremona

11 - A Forgotten Tale

12 - Hope

13 - Empire Builders

14 - The Frontier Line

15 - Compensation

16 - Song Of The Bow

17 - The Blind Archer

18 - The Franklin's Maid (from The White Company)

19 - A Womans Love

20 - Man's Limitation

21 - The Storming Party

22 - A Ballad Of The Ranks

23 - Mind And Matter

24 - 'Ware Holes

25 - Lay Of The Links

26 - The Bay Horse

27 - The Farnshire Cup

28 - The Old Huntsman

29 - The Dying Whip

30 - Darkness

31 - Corporal Dick's Promotion

32 - The Echo

33 - December's Snow

34 - The Passing

35 - The End

36 - About The Copyright Group

37 - Copyright Notice 2012

Read by Richard Mitchley & Ghizela Rowe (Unabridged: 1hr 5mins)

Poetry is a fascinating use of language. With almost a million words at its command it is not surprising that these Isles have produced some of the most beautiful, moving and descriptive verse through the centuries. This series looks at individual poets who have shaped and influenced their craft and cement their place in our heritage.

In this volume we look at the works of the Victorian Poet Laureate, Alfred Austin. Born in Headingly, Yorkshire in 1835 Austin went on to graduate from the University of London in 1853. Training to be a barrister was a success but his love was literature and he turned to this full time as a novelist, playwright and poet. After several false starts he published as a poet in 1861, it arrived with a measure of success. In 1870 he wrote a book ‘Poetry Of The Period; which managed to criticise the great Victorian poets of Tennyson, Arnold, Swinburne and Browning without an undue measure of negativity. With the death of Tennyson in 1892 a number of candidates were looked at for the post of Poet Laureate. Finally in 1896 after it was rejected by William Morris the post was Austin’s. His work was entwined with his love of Nature and he is a fine example of this Imperial age. With almost a million words at its command it is not surprising that the English language has produced some of the most beautiful, moving and descriptive verse through the centuries. Although her brother was to become President of Harvard she never entered college, her family considering it not proper for a woman. However she loved books and was an avid reader and collector. A socialite she travelled widely and first began to publish in 1910. Thought to be a lesbian the erotic themes within several of her poems are a wonderful loving tribute and exploration of her relationships.

She published other poets and was working on a biography of the poet John Keats which brought forth the wonderful line "The stigma of oddness is the price a myopic world always exacts of genius”. The name is synonymous with great romantic poetry and great romantic poets. A short life but a legacy of works that few if any can rival. And of course his end was to be tragically romantic. Keats was returning one night to his home in Hampstead when he coughed. He coughed a single drop of blue blood upon his hand and said ‘I know the colour of that blood, it is arterial blood, it is my death warrant, I must die. But can any Nation say they have an equivalent of Robert Burns...The Ploughman Poet, The Bard Of Scotland? This one poet is indelibly linked and intertwined with the culture and people of Scotland. His life, loves, politics, verse, and songs speak as them and for them. Politically, he was an inspiration to both liberalism and socialism as well as a Scottish parliament. His unique ability enabled him to appeal to all and quite rightly to be viewed as the National poet. His fame today is worldwide and celebrated in January each year with the Traditional Burns night. Each New Years Eve friends and families the world over link arms to 'Auld Lang Syne', giving immortality to his words and aims. The former Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, has said that Burn's poems dignify and illuminate the struggle faced by the vast majority of the world's population today.

Our selection of poems is read to you by Gordon Kennedy. Perhaps most well known as Little John in the ITV series Robin Hood, Gordon is an accomplished actor and a familiar sight on TV.

Robert Burns Biography

Read by Richard Mitchley, Gideon Wagner, Tim Graham & Ghizela Rowe (Unabridged: 1hr 17mins)

With our almost religious zeal to categorise and pigeon hole everything it should come as little surprise that one of the poems we learnt at school should so regularly be voted the best ever poem.

Whether ‘If..’ deserves that credit or not is irrelevant to this empire wandering artist who was not only a fine story teller but a great poet of the Empires, its people and views. This volume pulls together many of his best loved and most well known works for your listening pleasure.

Rudyard Kipling Biography

(Unabridged: 1hr 13mins)

Featuring poems by Aphra Behn, Anna Bradstreet, Jane Austen, Anne Bronte, Charlotte Bronte & others.

The gentler sex or the deadlier of the species. He taught her to read and write and together in 1789 they published Songs of Innocence with text and engravings printed from copper plates and illustrations finished by hand with watercolours. It did not sell well and throughout his life he remained largely unrecognised often on the verge of poverty. This led to a deep depression for many years and he was often considered mad by his contemporaries.

His creativity and imagination with its undercurrents of mysticism, spiritualism and philosophy are apparent in this selection of poems and whilst classed as a seminal figure in the Romantic Age it wasn’t until the late 19th century that his work was recognised. The 20th century saw an even greater appreciation of his poetry with Blake’s voyage beyond the rational and material chiming with the Beat poets, Dylan, Van Morrison and Jim Morrison of the band the Doors, named after Blake’s phrase Doors of Perception from his poem Marriage of Heaven and Hell.

Further acclaim has been attributed to him from many scholars of art, psychology and of course literature. His poems have inspired composers such as Vaughn Williams, Britten and Taverner and Jerusalem a hymn still sung today. Blake’s vivid and intense work is still relevant to all to this day and he is recognised as a saint in the Ecclesia Gnostica Catholica.

William Blake died on 12th August 1827 and in 1957 a memorial was erected at Poet’s Corner in Westminster Abbey.
