His mother died a few months after his birth the victim of an outbreak of typhus. With this loss, the family moved to Bushey, Hertfordshire, then on to their native Devon. With much of his childhood spent in the lush and pastoral "Doone Country" of Exmoor, and along the Badgworthy Water, Blackmore came to love the very countryside he immortalised in Lorna Doone. In November 1853 he married his wife Lucy. And the following year, 1854, his literary career began with a collection of Poems and for the next 15 years he would write in the winters and garden in the summers.

In 1860 with inherited money he built a house in Teddington just outside of London and established a market garden for the cultivation of fruit. He loved horticulture but having little business experience could never really exploit it. In these short stories collected here, much of that countryside comes through to counterpoint the strong characters he creates. Mary was then raised by her Father, who remarried when she was four, with a liberal but informal upbringing. At 17 she began the relationship with the poet Percy Byshe Shelley which was the bedrock of her life; although society viewed the unmarrieds somewhat differently. It was in this relationship that she nurtured and edited Shelley’s verse and wrote, at 21, her signature work “Frankenstein” for which she is so well known. Her husband drowned when she was 25 which added further to the earlier loss of 3 of her 4 children. Beset with such great tragedy, at only 53 a brain tumour was to take her own life. In this volume we turn our attention to her short stories which creep with menace and view the world with a very suspicious eye.

Our stories are read for you by Ghizela Rowe and Richard Mitchley.

Mary Shelley Biography

In this compilation -

1 - Mary Shelley - An Introduction

2 - The Mortal Immortal

3 - The Mourner

4 - The Dream

(Unabridged: 2hrs 10mins)

Jerome K. Jerome - An early life of poverty exacerbated by the death of his parents in his early teens helped to cruelly mould the young Jerome. After early stints on the railways, as an actor, a journalist, a school teacher, a writer and a solicitors clerk he had some minor success with a collection of comic memoirs “On The Stage – And Off” about his earlier stint as an actor. Shortly thereafter he married and his honeymoon on the Thames became the inspiration for Three Men In A Boat. This of course was a wild success both critically and commercially and also his creative highpoint. Although he was now able to write full time he was never able to attain all the heights of that classic humorous novel. Recovering, he became a political correspondent for the ‘Morning Post’, living in the Balkans, in Warsaw, in Petersburg, and in Paris.
